Successful Indoor Mass Storage of Honeybee Queens (Apis mellifera) during Winter

چکیده
The production of young, mated honeybee queens (Apis mellifera) is essential to replace dead or start new colonies after wintering. Mass storage during winter and their use the following spring an interesting strategy that could help fulfill this need. In study, we investigated survival, fertility, fecundity stored massively in queenless from September April (eight months). were kept environmentally controlled rooms at temperatures above below cluster formation. results show indoor mass can be achieved with success when queen banks are temperature. Significantly higher survival was measured wintering 16 °C. Surviving wintered different formation had similar fertility (sperm viability) (egg laying viable worker population). This study shows potential overwintering banks. technique describe applied on a commercial scale by beekeepers breeders.

Asexually produced Cape honeybee queens (Apis mellifera capensis) reproduce sexually.
Unmated workers of the Cape honeybee Apis mellifera capensis can produce female offspring including daughter queens. As worker-laid queens are produced asexually, we wondered whether these asexually produced individuals reproduce asexually or sexually. We sampled 11 colonies headed by queens known to be the clonal offspring of workers and genotyped 23 worker offspring from each queen at 5 micro...
متن کاملResonance frequencies of honeybee (Apis mellifera) wings.
During flight, insect wings bend and twist under the influence of aerodynamic and inertial forces. We tested whether wing resonance of honeybees (Apis mellifera) matches the wingbeat frequency, against the 'stiff element' hypothesis that the wing's first longitudinal mode exceeds the wingbeat frequency. Six bees were immobilized with their right wing pair outspread, and stimulated with a shaker...

متن کاملThermal learning in the honeybee, Apis mellifera.
Honeybee foragers are exposed to thermal stimuli when collecting food outside and receiving food rewards inside the nest. In both contexts, there is an opportunity for foragers to associate warmth with food rewards. However, honeybee thermal learning is poorly understood. Using an associative learning paradigm (the proboscis extension reflex), we show that honeybees can learn to associate a nec...
متن کاملViruses Associated with Ovarian Degeneration in Apis mellifera L. Queens
Queen fecundity is a critical issue for the health of honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies, as she is the only reproductive female in the colony and responsible for the constant renewal of the worker bee population. Any factor affecting the queen's fecundity will stagnate colony development, increasing its susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. We discovered a pathology affecting the ovari...
